Finland, officially the Republic of Finland (Finnish: Suomen tasavalta, Swedish: Republiken Finland), is a country in Northern Europe. It is bordered by Sweden to the west, Russia to the east, Norway to the north, and Estonia to the south across the Gulf of Finland.
Historically, Finland was ever a part of Sweden for a long time (from the 12th century to the 18th century) and then became a grand duchy ruled by the Czar of Russia during the period 1809-1917. On 6th December 1917, Finland officially declared its independence and became a republic. After the World War 2, it was a neutral country and was rapidly transformed from a backward agricultural economy to a developed industrial economy in Europe. Nowadays, it is a democratic country under the parliamentary public regime. It became a member of the United Nations in 1955 and joined the European Union in 1995.
Finnish, one of the Finno-Ugric languages in the Ural language system, is the language used by Finnish people. Since 1809, it has been the official language (together with Swedish) of Finland and the Republic of Karelia in Russia. This language has a close relation with the Estonian language and a far relation with the Sami and Hungarian languages. These languages form the the Ural language system.
The publishing of Kalevala epic of Elias Lönnrot raised the movement of asking for replacing the Swedish language with the Finnish language as the official language of the authority and education.
The Finnish language is spoken by people in Finland and other areas where Finnish people such as the United States of America.
Vietnam-Finland cooperation: Potential fields
Vietnam has determined that the EU is one of important investment partners. Finland is considered as a very potential partner with many advantages to Vietnam. Both the countries have signed an agreement for the encouragement and protection of investment on the occasion of an official visit of Finnish President Tarja Halonen to Vietnam.
At the Vietnam-Finland Business Forum held in Hanoi on 22nd February by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), Confederation of Finnish Industries, and the Embassy of Finland in Vietnam, President Tarja Halonen stated that Vietnam is an attractive investment destination for Finnish companies.
Advantageous mechanisms
Arriving in Hanoi on the occasion of the official visit of the Finnish President, the Finnish Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Vayrynen said that it was difficult to identify Hanoi City where he visited in 1984 when he worked in the field of foreign affairs.
“Hanoi’s development is very impressive; Vietnam’s economy is integrating intensively into the international economy. The Vietnamese Government has tried to gain achievements for the sake of citizens’ benefits”, Mr. Paavo Vayrynen said.
Potential fields
Nature in Finland is instable; especially sea areas lower than the Baltic Sea level. For this reason, Finland tried to develop environmentally-friendly technologies. During the last 100 years, Finland has managed and exploited these forests efficiently.
First, in order to efficiently manage forests in Vietnam, it is necessary to have information about the forest system. Finland can cooperate with Vietnam in information determination and assessment.
Second, natural resource strategies of Vietnam must be attached to forestation programs. Finland has experience in this matter.
Third, in order to develop the forestry branch of Vietnam, it is necessary to have cooperation between forestry companies of Finland and Vietnam. Such companies can operate in the forestry field or related fields.
At present, Finland produces about 25% of its energy source from the renewable energy source. A renewable energy policy is also one of the important policies given by the European Community.
At the end of 2007, Finland was ranked the 46th in the list of countries and territories with investment projects in Vietnam. It has 5 investment projects with total registered capital of USD 33.4 million and realized capital of USD 6.6 million.
